APLS and the Public Library Division of the Alabama Library Association conducted a survey of salaries paid to public library employees in 1998. The results are now available to aid libraries in determining fair salaries for employees.
Salary ranges and median salary for 17 library positions are available in seven categories based on the population served by public libraries. The population categories are: Libraries serving over 150,000; Libraries serving 50,000-100,000; Libraries serving 35,000-50,000; Libraries serving 15,000-35,000; Libraries serving 10,000-15,000; Libraries serving 5,000-10,000; and Libraries serving under 5,000.
The survey response rate was 53 percent, representing 111 public libraries. The survey results are intended to provide information and are not to be considered recommended salaries.
Currently, plans are to update the salary information every two years. However, if the information proves beneficial, it can be updated more often. One of the questions on the survey asked librarians how often the survey should be conducted and the consensus was that an annual survey was not necessary but a two-year cycle would be helpful.
